Have you registered your Will yet?

When the UK’s Will Register www.certainty.co.uk went online in March 2008 they offered the general public the unique opportunity to register their existing Wills for free. Since March 2008, approaching 1 million of the free Will registrations have already been allocated. The register ensures that the location of your Will is recorded so it can be found when you pass on. Thousands of benefactors and next of kin can’t find loved ones Wills for a variety of reasons.

A Certainty spokesperson said, “The response has been tremendous infact we hadn’t anticipated to allocate so many Will registrations in the first year of the register. As the free allocations are rapidly depleting for this year I would urge members of the public to act quickly if they wish to register their Will. It takes just 60 seconds to register the location of your Will and save yourself £25 while the offer is still running”.

It is traditionally acknowledged that there is a degree of intrepidation about writing a Will but Certainty’s chairman Past Law Society President Kevin Martin stresses that it’s important to act now to protect your family from the financial and emotional turmoil that can arise by not having a Will or family not being able to locate your Will.

Kevin says, “There is a common misconception that if a Will cannot be found the next of kin automatically receives everything automatically which is not the case. Infact without a valid Will, the present rules governing your estate if you die without a Will have little regard for your wishes. Your loved ones may not receive the inheritance that you would wish and you potentially run the risk of depriving your spouse or partner of their home and increasing the inheritance tax (IHT) burden”.

To see if you’re eligible for a free registration log onto www.certainty.co.uk. If you would like your solicitor to register your Will on your behalf or if you would like to update your Will you can also log on to find details of your local solicitor.
